Common Sleep Disorders: Narcolepsy 〰️

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep, affecting approximately 1 in 2,000 people in the United States. At Century Sleep, Inc., under the expert leadership of Medical Director Said Mostafavi, M.D., we specialize in the diagnosis and management of narcolepsy, aiming to significantly improve the quality of life for our patients through personalized treatment plans.

The Nature of Narcolepsy

This condition often goes misunderstood and underdiagnosed, with many patients experiencing symptoms for years before receiving a proper diagnosis. Narcolepsy can manifest in two types: Type 1, which includes the symptom of cataplexy (a sudden, brief loss of muscle tone triggered by strong emotions), and is often linked to low levels of the neurotransmitter hypocretin; and Type 2, which lacks cataplexy but still involves excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep episodes.

Symptoms and Impact

Beyond its hallmark signs of excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, narcolepsy can lead to sleep paralysis, hallucinations at the onset of sleep, and disrupted nighttime sleep. These symptoms collectively impose significant challenges on daily activities, affecting school, work, and personal life. Despite its prevalence, it’s estimated that up to 50% of people with narcolepsy are undiagnosed, making awareness and education crucial.

How Century Sleep, Inc. Can Help

At Century Sleep, Inc., we understand that living with narcolepsy can be profoundly challenging. Dr. Said Mostafavi and our team utilize the latest in sleep medicine research to offer advanced diagnostic tests, such as polysomnograms and multiple sleep latency tests, to accurately diagnose narcolepsy. Treatment typically involves medications to regulate the sleep cycle and manage symptoms, coupled with lifestyle adjustments to help patients lead more normal and active lives.

Recognizing the deeply personal impact of narcolepsy, we provide compassionate care and support every step of the way. Our goal is not just to manage symptoms but to empower our patients to achieve their fullest potential despite the challenges posed by narcolepsy.
