Common Sleep Disorders: Periodic Leg Movements 〰️

Periodic Limb Movements during Sleep (PLMS) is a condition characterized by repetitive cramping or jerking movements of the legs during sleep. These movements can significantly disrupt sleep and affect the quality of life, leading to daytime fatigue and mood disturbances. At Century Sleep, Inc., under the direction of our Medical Director Said Mostafavi, M.D., we are committed to diagnosing and managing PLMS, helping our patients achieve a more restful and restorative night's sleep.

Understanding PLMS

PLMS often involves movements of the lower limbs, typically occurring every 20 to 40 seconds in clusters throughout the night. Although the exact cause of PLMS is not fully understood, it is associated with various conditions, including restless legs syndrome (RLS), kidney failure, and spinal cord injuries. It is important to note that not everyone with PLMS experiences sleep disruptions or other symptoms, but when they do, it can significantly impact their daily functioning.

The Impact of PLMS

For those affected by PLMS, the involuntary leg movements can lead to frequent awakenings and prevent deep, restorative sleep stages. Over time, this can result in excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, and a decreased overall quality of life. Additionally, PLMS can be a strain on bed partners, often affecting their sleep quality as well.

How We Can Help

Diagnosing PLMS typically involves an overnight sleep study (polysomnography), where we monitor sleep patterns, movements, and breathing. This comprehensive evaluation allows us to accurately diagnose PLMS and differentiate it from other sleep disorders. Treatment options at Century Sleep, Inc. may include medications that reduce or eliminate limb movements, improving sleep quality and duration. In some cases, addressing underlying conditions or adjusting medications can significantly reduce symptoms.
