Common Sleep Disorders: REM Sleep Behavior Disorders 〰️

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a unique sleep disorder characterized by the acting out of vivid, often intense dreams during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage of sleep. Century Sleep, Inc., led by our distinguished medical director Said Mostafavi, M.D., we provide expert diagnosis and treatment for RBD, aiming to protect our patients from potential harm and improve their sleep quality.

Understanding REM Sleep Behavior Disorder

RBD disrupts the natural paralysis that occurs during REM sleep, a period when most dreaming happens. Without this protective paralysis, individuals are free to move, which can lead to potentially harmful behaviors based on the scenarios playing out in their dreams. It's estimated that RBD affects less than 1% of the population but is more common in older adults and men. Symptoms include shouting, kicking, punching, or even getting out of bed and engaging in complex activities, all while asleep. These actions can be dangerous to the sleeper and their bed partner.

The Risks and Challenges of RBD

The main concern with RBD is the risk of injury to oneself or a sleeping partner. Beyond the physical risks, the disorder can also have psychological impacts, causing anxiety around sleep and impacting overall well-being. Importantly, RBD can be a precursor to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, making early diagnosis and management crucial.

Our Approach to Managing RBD

Diagnosing RBD involves a comprehensive evaluation, including a detailed medical history and often a sleep study (polysomnography) to monitor behaviors during sleep. At Century Sleep, Inc., we emphasize a personalized treatment plan that may include medication to reduce REM sleep disturbances and physical activity during dreams. Safety measures are also a key component of treatment, involving modifications to the sleep environment to prevent injuries.

Our team, under the guidance of Dr. Mostafavi, is committed to providing the highest standard of care, utilizing the latest research and treatment strategies for RBD. We also focus on education and support for patients and their families, helping them understand the condition and how to manage it effectively.
