Common Sleep Disorders: Parasomnia 〰️

Parasomnias represent a category of sleep disorders that involve abnormal movements, behaviors, emotions, perceptions, and dreams that occur while falling asleep, sleeping, between sleep stages, or during arousal from sleep. Century Sleep, Inc., under the leadership of Medical Director Said Mostafavi, M.D., is at the forefront of diagnosing and treating these complex disorders, helping patients reclaim their night and enjoy peaceful sleep.

The Spectrum of Parasomnias

Parasomnias encompass a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to sleepwalking, night terrors, and REM sleep behavior disorder. These disorders can affect anyone, though some forms are more common in children and tend to decrease with age. Despite their prevalence, parasomnias often remain underdiagnosed, with many individuals unaware that their nocturnal disturbances are a treatable sleep disorder.

Impact and Symptoms

The symptoms of parasomnias can significantly disrupt sleep for both the individual and family members, leading to daytime sleepiness, psychological distress, and in some cases, injury. For example, sleepwalking can involve complex behaviors such as walking, talking, or even driving, all while in a state of partial consciousness. Night terrors are characterized by intense fear, screaming, and an inability to be consoled. REM sleep behavior disorder involves acting out vivid, often unpleasant dreams with vocal sounds and sudden, often violent arm and leg movements.

Treatment strategies may include medication, lifestyle and environmental modifications, and in some cases, cognitive-behavioral therapy to minimize episodes and ensure safety during sleep.

Our goal is to address not only the symptoms of parasomnias but also any underlying conditions or factors contributing to the disorder, such as stress or sleep deprivation. We are committed to providing education and support for patients and families, empowering them with strategies to manage or eliminate parasomnia episodes and improve sleep quality.
